Honesdale Torture Suspect Surrenders After Skipping Bail Hearing; Preliminary Hearing Set for New Year’s Eve

Van Valkenburg turned himself in after bench warrant issued Tuesday; faces 16 charges including first-degree kidnapping in Lebanon Township assault

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY — The Honesdale man accused of torturing his girlfriend with a shovel and staple gun surrendered to authorities after a bench warrant was issued when he failed to appear for a bail revocation hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Jason J. Van Valkenburg, 49, was a no-show at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2025, before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan J. Dunsinger. The judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest. Van Valkenburg later turned himself in. His preliminary hearing remains scheduled for Tuesday, December 31, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at Wayne County Central Court.

Van Valkenburg posted $100,000 bail on December 11 — just three days after his arraignment — through professional bondsman Serena Gerlinde Metschulat. He had been free for 12 days when he missed Tuesday’s hearing.

The Charges

PSP Honesdale Trooper Robi L. Wareham charged Van Valkenburg with 16 counts stemming from an incident at 2012 Great Bend Turnpike in Lebanon Township on December 4, 2025:

  • Unlawful Restraint/Involuntary Servitude (M1)
  • False Imprisonment (M2)
  • Simple Assault (M2) — 8 counts
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person (M2) — 3 counts

Prosecutors say Van Valkenburg beat his girlfriend with a shovel, fired a staple gun into her chest, and threatened to hang her in the basement. The victim told investigators Van Valkenburg had been using methamphetamine since October, triggering “severe paranoia.”
