TUNKHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY – A 43-year-old Indiana man was killed early Thursday morning when his vehicle crashed on Interstate 80 in the Poconos.
Sarwan Sandhu was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:13 AM, according to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office. He was alone in the vehicle. No other cars were involved.
The crash happened shortly after midnight on I-80 in Tunkhannock Township, a rural stretch of highway that cuts through the northern edge of Monroe County near Blakeslee—just west of where I-80 meets I-380.
Pennsylvania State Police at the Fern Ridge barracks are investigating. They have not said what caused Sandhu to crash or released details about the type of vehicle he was driving.
An autopsy was scheduled for Friday. The coroner’s office said the cause and manner of death remain pending.
What We Don’t Know Yet
State police have not disclosed:
- What direction Sandhu was traveling
- Whether speed, weather, or mechanical failure played a role
- What type of vehicle was involved
- Whether Sandhu was wearing a seatbelt
- The exact mile marker where the crash occurred
The Pocono Record has reached out to PSP Fern Ridge for additional details. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
The section of I-80 running through Tunkhannock Township has a history of serious crashes.
The highway passes through one of the highest elevations along its 311-mile route across Pennsylvania, climbing above 1,900 feet near the I-380 junction. Weather shifts quickly at that altitude. Fog, black ice, and sudden snow squalls have contributed to multi-vehicle pileups on this stretch over the years.
In March, two women—Joann Keifer, 75, and Cherylynn Frantz, 55, both of Tunkhannock Township—were killed in a crash on nearby Route 115 when fog reduced visibility to near zero. In October, Jamie Franks, 52, of Chestnut Hill Township, died in a two-vehicle crash in Jackson Township.
Sandhu’s death marks at least the third fatal crash in Monroe County in the past three months.
Little is known publicly about Sandhu. He was 43 years old and from Indiana. It’s unclear why he was traveling through Northeast Pennsylvania in the middle of the night or where he was headed.
The coroner’s office identified him as the sole occupant and driver of the vehicle.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Pennsylvania State Police Fern Ridge at 570-646-2271.
