STROUDSBURG, PA — Monroe County law enforcement is mourning K9 Bendix, a 10-year-old Belgian Malinois who became one of the region’s most accomplished narcotics detection dogs. Bendix passed away peacefully November 21 in the arms of his handler, Lt. Michael Sampere of the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, after a brief illness.
“Our hearts are heavy,” the department announced, expressing the loss felt throughout the Stroudsburg area for a K9 who served from July 2018 through his January 2023 retirement.

Five Years Protecting the Poconos
Bendix patrolled Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg and Stroud Township, becoming a critical weapon against drug trafficking along Interstate 80 and throughout Monroe County. His dual-purpose training in patrol and narcotics detection led to numerous drug seizures, cash confiscations tied to trafficking operations, and evidence recoveries that solved local cases.
Beyond drug work, Bendix tracked missing persons through the Pocono region’s challenging terrain and assisted in manhunts when suspects fled into the county’s extensive forests. His skills were regularly requested by other Monroe County agencies, Pennsylvania State Police, and federal task forces working the region.
Lt. Sampere, a Monroe County law enforcement veteran, partnered with Bendix throughout his entire career. The bond between handler and K9 extends far beyond the badge—police dogs live with their handlers, becoming family members who happen to wear a uniform.
Community Icon
Stroudsburg area residents knew Bendix from community demonstrations at schools and public safety events, where the Belgian Malinois showcased his abilities and served as an ambassador for local law enforcement. Kids especially loved meeting the “fan favorite” who could sniff out drugs and track through woods with equal skill.
“Throughout his career, K9 Bendix exemplified loyalty, bravery and service,” the department said. “Beyond all his professional achievements, he was a beloved companion and family member and will be deeply missed.”
The Stroud Area Regional Police Department maintains a K9 unit critical to operations in a region bisected by I-80—a major drug corridor—and covered by vast woodlands where tracking skills prove essential.
“Rest in Peace K9 Bendix and thank you for your years of dedicated service to the SARPD and surrounding communities,” the department said. “Our hearts are with the Sampere family during this difficult time.”
