The Hideout

The Hideout is a gated community of roughly 3,600 homes in Salem Township, governed by its own property owners association and staffed with a private public safety force. In September 2025, Hideout public safety officer José Duran was shot and killed responding to an active shooter call, allegedly by resident Lucas Aron Gartrell after his parents came to check on him over mental health concerns — Gartrell was scheduled for formal arraignment on 14 felony and misdemeanor charges, including murder of a law enforcement officer. Duran’s stolen firearm and a cache of swords, knives and daggers were later recovered from the scene.

In the months since, this outlet has tracked what happened to the donations raised in Duran’s name. Duran’s widow was the first to demand answers about where the money went; weeks later, new details emerged showing a memorial fund whose checks were endorsed by a nonprofit run by the HOA board president’s spouse — a relationship never disclosed to donors or to Duran’s widow. Three Hideout board members resigned within days of the reporting, offering no public explanation.

This page also follows the criminal case against Gartrell. His arraignment was reset to January after a last-minute defense motion delayed his December court date and a second continuance pushed it back again, with no new date yet set. He faces first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, which under Pennsylvania law carries the death penalty or mandatory life without parole.
