Fraud Cases in Pennsylvania and the Pocono Region

Fraud encompasses a broad range of criminal conduct — from identity theft and insurance fraud to wire fraud, contractor fraud, and public corruption — and it is one of the most common categories of white-collar crime investigated by law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania and the Pocono Mountains region. The Pocono Review covers fraud cases as part of its public interest reporting, drawing on court records, police press releases, and official statements from prosecutors.

In the Pocono region, contractor fraud is among the most frequently reported types of fraud. Homeowners — particularly those who are newer to the area or unfamiliar with local contractors — are sometimes targeted by individuals who collect deposits for home improvement work and then fail to complete the job or disappear entirely. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office and local district attorneys actively prosecute contractor fraud cases, and convictions can result in both restitution orders and prison time.

Identity theft is another pervasive form of fraud that affects residents throughout the region. Thieves obtain personal information through data breaches, phishing schemes, mail theft, and other methods, then use it to open fraudulent accounts, file false tax returns, or obtain loans or benefits in victims’ names. The Pennsylvania State Police and local departments investigate identity theft cases, and the Attorney General’s office maintains resources to help victims navigate the recovery process.

Insurance fraud, mortgage fraud, and benefits fraud are also prosecuted in Monroe, Pike, and Wayne counties. These cases often come to light through audits, tips from co-workers or neighbors, or investigations by state agencies. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department and the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General each operate fraud investigation units that work on these types of cases.

Federal fraud charges — particularly wire fraud — are frequently used in cases involving schemes that cross state lines or use electronic communications. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania prosecutes federal fraud cases originating in the Pocono region, and federal sentences can be significantly longer than those available under state law.

If you believe you’ve been the victim of fraud in the Pocono region, report it to your local police department, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s consumer protection office, or the Federal Trade Commission’s online reporting system.
