Waymart Man Admits He Framed Hawley Woman in Antisemitic Email to Honesdale Business

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY — A Waymart man faces 18 criminal charges after confessing he framed a former coworker by sending an antisemitic email to a Jewish-owned Honesdale printing business where both had worked.

John Andrew Maddi, 38, of Waymart, told Pennsylvania State Police at Honesdale he created a fake email account impersonating Korin Avery Carl, 21, of Hawley, then sent the Honesdale business a message containing swastikas, antisemitic caricatures, and threats that “your people should be exterminated.”

Carl was arrested in Wayne County, charged with ethnic intimidation and terroristic threats, and her mugshot aired on local news.

Then Maddi walked into PSP Honesdale on Dec. 15 and confessed.

“Even though I don’t care for her, I can’t let her go through this,” Maddi told WNEP.

The Wayne County District Attorney’s office withdrew all charges against the Hawley woman the next morning.

What Happened

The Honesdale business owner reported the email Dec. 7. The sender claimed to have “recently decided to become a Neo Nazi” and wanted t-shirts made for her “new identity.”

Trooper Robert Wareham of PSP Honesdale filed charges against Carl based on the email’s apparent origin. She was arraigned Dec. 13 at Wayne County Magisterial District Court, released on $25,000 bail, and hired Archbald attorney William James Aquilino.

Court records show Maddi was fired from the Honesdale business earlier this year. He told WNEP that Carl had complained about him to their employer.

“I got really upset at them,” Maddi said. “I wanted to get back at them by playing a tasteless prank.”

He said he chose antisemitic content because he knew it would be a “sensitive topic.” He denied holding neo-Nazi beliefs.

After seeing Carl’s arrest on the news, the Waymart man turned himself in at the Honesdale barracks and handed over his computer as proof.

Maddi was arraigned Dec. 16 at Wayne County Magisterial District Court before MDJ Casimir Kosciolek. He faces two counts each of:

Hawley Woman’s Case Dismissed

All five charges against the Hawley woman were withdrawn Dec. 16. Wayne County court records show Carl was never fingerprinted — the case ended before reaching that stage.

Aquilino did not respond to a request for comment.
