Police close Biden Street as investigation continues at historic Hotel Jermyn building
SCRANTON, PA — At least three people were wounded in a machete attack Tuesday evening at the Jermyn Apartments, a senior housing complex in downtown Scranton.
Scranton Police and emergency medical services responded to the former Hotel Jermyn at 326 Biden Street around 6:15 p.m. The suspect was apprehended nearby at Wyoming Avenue and Biden Street.
“The Scranton Police Department is investigating a stabbing at the Jermyn Apartments on Biden Street,” Police Chief Thomas Carroll said in a statement. “Three persons are currently being treated for wounds at local hospitals. The actor is in custody.”
The severity of the victims’ injuries was not immediately disclosed. Emergency radio traffic indicated police forced entry into a room at the building and requested additional EMS units; it was unclear whether additional victims were located. Carroll said the investigation remains active and additional details would be released at a later time.
Police shut down westbound traffic and closed the 300 block of Biden Street while investigators processed the scene.
The Jermyn Apartments occupy a seven-story Romanesque-style building constructed in 1896 by coal magnate John Jermyn. The historic structure, which once served as one of Scranton’s premier hotels, was converted into 85 affordable housing units for adults 55 and older or individuals with permanent disabilities.
The building has drawn police attention before. In April 2022, Scranton Police executed a search warrant at a sixth-floor apartment and seized more than $17,000 worth of narcotics.
Anyone with information about Tuesday’s stabbing is asked to contact the Scranton Police Department.
